Toward the end of the war of 1812, after Napoleon had been defeated, England sent a major portion of her victorious army to Canada. They planned to invade the United States from the north while diverting attention away with a raid on Washington and Baltimore.
Fifteen thousand British regulars and a fleet of Royal Navy ships and gunboats descended upon an American land and naval force gathered at Plattsburgh. The American regular army formation numbered 1500 and her naval flotilla was badly outgunned. But the hand of Providence that had helped this new nation form from a colony 40 years before, during the revolutionary war, once again intervened.
